Volunteers help shores sparkle in Vallejo
Among the largest group of volunteers were the members of Iglesia Ni Cristo, which drew 140 people like 15-year-olds Jomari and Jeremiah.
After hours of plucking junk from the Mare Island shoreline Saturday, Jesse Bethel High School sophomores Jomari Mayo and Jeremiah Tanca were ready for a shower.
"We picked up a lot of cigarette butts," Jomari said.
And they weren't alone.
About 600 volunteers scoured the shores and waterways of Vallejo during the 25th annual Coastal Cleanup, collecting more than 43,000 pounds of trash and recyclables.
Among them were a blue bowling ball, a jet ski without an engine and an Elvis air freshener, said Jennifer Kaiser, spokesperson for the Vallejo Sanitation and Flood Control District as well as organizer of the cleanups.
This is the 19th year Vallejo has participated in the event.
Among the largest group of volunteers were the members of Iglesia Ni Cristo, which drew 140 people like 15-year-olds Jomari and Jeremiah.
"I would tell anybody that I know to do this every year, and everywhere they go, to pick up garbage even if they didn't throw it on the ground," said Jeremiah, who has attended Coastal Cleanup events since he was 5 years old.
